The American Music Center and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (Sixteen as One
Music, Inc.) are applying to the National Endowment for the Arts to restore,
reconstruct, document and preserve eleven unpublished works for big band by
legendary jazz composer, arranger, and performer, Thad Jones.
This project is the first major phase of the Thad Jones Legacy Project, designed
to preserve, present and explore the repertoire of Thad Jones, one of the key
figures in American music history. The Thad Jones Legacy Project includes: the
restoration of unavailable musical works; the correction and restoration of
existing published music; the recording of never before recorded material and
out-of-print recorded music; and the creation of documentation including
catalogs, guidebooks and a website.
This application is to fund the first phase of the project, which will focus
exclusively on the most urgent issues: the restoration and reconstruction of
eleven of Thad Jones's unpublished compositions and arrangements for big band,
which have been unavailable for performance or study for over 20 years. These
works, all of which are masterpieces, exist only on recordings from the 1970s or
through unreleased private tapes; some parts exist within the Vanguard's
performance library; no scores are available anywhere.
