To support: Artists' fees and other direct expenses incurred by the Educational Continuum-Los Angeles Opera's nationally recognized progressive and sequential arts education programming. The Educational Continuum targets students at four discrete stages in their development with programs created for their age and interest level. Intense and participatory by nature, these programs include Elementary and Secondary In-School Opera Programs, the Student Matinee Program and Opera for Educators. Each year, the Educational Continuum serves over 30,000 Los Angeles public school students.
Over the course of five- or nine-week workshops, young participants of the In-School Opera Programs learn about opera and the arts first-hand by creating their own costumes and sets and performing alongside professional opera singers in specially commissioned opera productions. Through the Student Matinee Program, students attend one of several fully staged, free-of-charge mainstage performances. For nine weeks prior to their excursion to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, students learn about opera in a cross-curricular context and discuss "their" opera's central themes. These programs are supported by Opera for Educators, an in-service seminar which provides educators with personal enrichment and strategies for incorporating opera into their classroom curriculum.
