To support: the development and production of DEAR WORLD by composer and lyricist Jerry Herman and the book writers Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee. This 1969 musical is based on the Jean Giraudoux play, THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT, which in 1948 was a popular, though not universally acclaimed French import. Following a several-month development and rehearsal period, DEAR WORLD will be presented in 96 public performances at Goodspeed's East Haddam mainstage during July, August, and September of 2000. Mr. Herman has approached Goodspeed about revisiting DEAR WORLD because of Goodspeed's reputation for rethinking forgotten gems. He has begun working on revisions and plans to fully take advantage of Goodspeed's developmental resources.
The full development of DEAR WORLD, an existing yet rarely produced musical, is central to Goodspeed's mission and key to the theatre's continuing initiatives to: 1) produce worthy work by celebrated artists as well as emerging artists; 2) enlist and nurture the talents of respected artistic associates; 3) encourage public participation in the musical theatre both at the Goodspeed and elsewhere; 4) facilitate the development of new work by transferring musicals to other regional theatres nationwide and promoting collaborations; 5) help develop diverse audiences who appreciate the various forms of musical theatre and participate in the creative process.
